Screening toddlers to cut heart attack risks
The New England Journal of Medicine
Screening toddlers’ cholesterol levels and genes when they visit a GP for routine vaccinations could help pick up families with a high risk of heart disease, say UK researchers. The research found that for every 1000 toddlers screened, 8 people could be identified as being at a high risk from familial hypercholesterolaemia, a genetic disorder which is linked to high cholesterol levels and puts people at an increased risk of a heart attack before the age of 40.
