Half a million dollar research into Maori medicine for diabetes
A Huntly woman will research plants used for traditional Maori medicine in a mission to treat type-2 diabetes.
Jonni Koia, a plant and food biologist, said she wanted to find a solution that did not have the side effects of current diabetes medications, such as heart failure and fluid retention.
“Māori herbal medicines have provided relief for many common ailments and chronic conditions over centuries where mātauranga Māori (traditional knowledge) holds significant importance.”
